LONG BEACH -- Senior Travis Buchanan scored the game-winner at 2:20 in the sixth overtime period to lift seventh-ranked Long Beach State to an 8-7 win over No. 12 Loyola Marymount on Thursday evening at the 49er Campus Pool. The win raises the 49ers record to 17-10 while LMU falls to 10-15.

The two squads have played twice this season and both games went to overtime. Long Beach won at LMU on October 4, 11-8, as the 49ers out-scored the Lions 4-1 in overtime.
The teams played to a 6-6 tie at the end of regulation, but the fun was just beginning. After a scoreless first overtime period, the 49ers Ash Blythen scored at 2:32 in the second OT to give the 49ers a 7-6 lead. LMU tied the game at 0:53 on a goal by Mark Milovic. The 49ers had one last shot at the end of the second overtime period, but Blythen's shot was stopped by LMU goalie Andy Stevens.

From there the two teams entered sudden death overtime. After three scoreless three-minute periods, the 49ers scored the winner at 2:20 as Buchanan scored from 12 yards out, his lone goal of the day.

Jake Kinne, Justin Koeppen and Blythen all scored two goals for Long Beach. Ryan Fair led the Lions with two goals.

Long Beach State goalie Steve MacKenzie had an outstanding game finishing with a career-high 17 saves. Six of his 17 saves came during the overtime periods. Stevens tallied 11 saves for the Lions.

LMU got off to a strong start, leading 3-1 after one quarter and 4-2 at the half. After Fair tallied his second goal of the day at 7:32 in the third, the Lions held a 5-2 advantage. Koeppen (6:14) and Kinne (0:21) sandwiched goals around an LMU tally to pull the 49ers to within 6-4 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Koeppen's second goal of the evening, at 6:13, cut the deficit to one. The 49ers finally pulled even at 3:23 as Jeff Greenwood scored on a man-advantage goal.
